Christa's Journal

WELCOME

Hello, I'm Christa Ysabel, a student journalist at Sacramento State. Due to complications at birth, I have Cerebral Palsy, which has led to a speech impediment. I often found myself repeating words for people. Fortunately, growing up in the digital age allowed me to discover my love for writing and self-expression through computers. Starting my journalism journey with my school's publication, The State Hornet, I've developed a passion for covering news and DEI stories.
What is the ADA and why does it matter?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was officially signed into law in 1990 during the presidency of George H.W Bush, marking a pivotal moment in the fight for civil rights in the United States. This comprehensive legislation aimed to eliminate discrimination against individuals with disabilities, ensuring they could participate fully in society. The ADA granted these individuals essential rights, including access to employment opportunities, public accommodations such as restaurants and transportation, and essential telecommunication services tailored for those with hearing impairments. By promoting inclusivity and accessibility, the ADA has had a lasting impact on the lives of millions, fostering a more equitable environment for all.

The Disability Cultural Center (DCC) opened its doors at Sac State during the fall semester of 2023. The DCC located in AIRC 2011 is equipped with an arrangement of comfortable seating from couches to bean bag chair, adaptive equipment, and adaptive computer equipment. The DCC also was the first to offer a sensory room with sensory lighting, fidget toys, and recently donated Barbies with disabilities.

Promoting Inclusivity
Disability inclusivity on a college campus is essential for creating an equitable environment where all students can thrive. By implementing accessible facilities, resources, and support systems, colleges can foster a culture of understanding and respect for individuals with disabilities.
